Bob Pirner, Lakota Indian descendant, leads opening prayer; Ellesa Clay High, author, Past Titan Rock: Journeys into an Appalachian Valley and chair of Native American Committee of the WV United Methodist church. Dr. Marian Hollinger, Museum Studies Coordinator at the Frank & Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center and Phyllis Moore 304-622-0485 who presented numerous articles, books, and publications are introduced; Bonnie Brown, Director: Native American Studies - WVU speaks. First of monthly series by friends of the Fairmont Human Rights commission devoted to explaining the proposed HRC to be voted upon in the November general election was held at First Baptist church, Rikki Pauley-Butler served as Master of Ceremonies. Groups supporting human rights spoke and shared their interests and concerns: Royce Lyden and Renee Verbanic discussed Communities of Shalom; Jenni Lesmann, Marion County Indivisible, spoke of this new group emerging; and DD Meighen spoke on behalf of the Greater Fairmont Council of churches. He then introduced Rev. Richard Bowyer who spoke of the past history of the Fairmont Human Rights Commission.

10:21     United Way Final Report: 10/28/17     28:03
Awards and honors were presented by Brett White, Executive Director of United Way; Michael Angelucci, 2018 Campaign Chair; and Holly Kaufman, United Way Board of Directors President. Campaign was successful as Fairmont State University raised over $14,320; Pierpont over $4,000; and Fairmont Regional Medical Centre over $15,000. Mon Power contributed over $58,000, Dancing with the Stars over $58,000; Designer Bag Bingo brought in $6,000; and the Celebration of Lights, in its 10th year, raised $60,000 with the help of the South Fairmont Rotary Club. United Way Executive Director Brett White said this year's campaign surpassed its goal by $22,000. Fairmont Federal Credit Union Received the Growth Award, with the Outstanding Employee Coordinator Award going to Donna Wilson of Fairmont Regional Medical Center. United Way Board President Holly Kauffman presented Brett White himself with the President's Award, for someone who "goes above and beyond to help the organization succeed.". The Chairman's Award went to Board Member Blair Nuzum-Wise.

The Rev. Donal "Jack" Squires Award is given in honor of a Marion County champion committed to the community. The award was presented to Gary Jack.

A new award, and the highest corporate award intended to recognize a standout workplace, went to Mon Power, which White called "a pinnacle of corporate philanthropy in our community."

This 6th Community Conversation on Substance Abuse includes interviews with CEO Michael Casdorph of UHC; Ann Hammond, WV Helpline, Peer Support and Women Director of Recovery Home at Temple United Methodist Church; Whitney Oliverio, Program Director, Josie's Hope of United Summit Center; & Jo Anne McNemar, MS, PSII, Partnership for Success, Anti-Stigma Initiative. She expanded the Mayor's Youth Council while on City Council to civic engaging these students in government through drug education. She also started SADD- Students Against Destructive Decision, Harrison County Dream Team and Mayor's Council on Youth Involvement in Government.

Highlights include approval of funds for new East Fairmont Fire Station, honoring East Fairmont Wrestlers, citizen's petition by Robert Anguilli and Nikki Lewis, manager of Main St. Fairmont. Robin Gomez presented budget for approval of $18,660,788 that was adopted. The detailed budget information is available on the city's website under finance. He mentioned that April 5th is first of 8 City 101 Meetings which details the operations of the city; first and third Thursday from 11:00-1:00 p.m.
