Highlights of renaming East Marion Park to the East Marion Memorial Veterans Park. Speakers include Rev. Jim Zinn, Ernie VanGilder, Marion County Commissioner Pres, Tom Mainella, City Council; Sen. Kent Leonhardt, R-Mon; Former (VFW) Post 7048 Commander John Harney; Randy Elliott, Commissioner; and former VFW Post 7048 Commander for Post 7048 Columbus Carpenter spoke at the ceremony. After the speakers, there was a 21-gun salute by the Marion County Military Veterans Council Honor Guard. A bugler played “Taps” during the ceremony

Highlights of the Introduction, Blessing and Dedication of the Hot-Cold Truck on July 29, 2016. Debbie Harvey, Executive Director, Marion County Senior Citizens Center; Tom Waskis, sales manager, Anthony Chevrolet Cadillac; Debbie Seifrit, Food Driver for the Senior Center; Nikki Osborne, Executive Director Marion County United Way; and Randy Elliott, County Commissioner are interviewed. Blessing the truck were Rev. DD Meighen and Wesley Dobbs.

09:30     UNITED WAY KICKOFF
Highlights of the Kickoff Breakfast on Aug. 2, 2016 at the FSU Rec. Center for the 2016-17 Campaign with the theme, “Give Local; Live Local,” featured comments from United Way Board Chair Blaire Nuzum-Wise, Campaign Chair Taylor Downs, Mary Jo Thomas, Pacesetters & Leadership Chairperson, who reported that $61,909 has been raised toward the goal of $440,000, and executive director of the United Way, Nicky Osbourne. Dr. Maria Rose gave the welcome and D.D, Meighen offered the invocation. Keynote speaker was Robin Gomez, City Manager, and a channel 12 Melissa Murray video was shown and received enthusiastically. The 20 agencies receiving support this year are American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America (Mountaineer Area Council), CASA of Marion County, Family Services, Connecting Link, Girl Scouts of Black Diamond council, Hope, Inc., Learning Options, Inc., literacy Volunteers of Marion County, Mannington Food Pantry, Rising Stars, The Disability Action Center, Marion County Child Advocacy Center, Senior Center, The Salvation Army, The Soup Opera, Scott Place Homeless Shelter, Steeping Stone, Inc., and YWCA.

The new President of Pierpont Community & Technical College, Dr. Johnny Moore, is interviewed at the Marion County Chamber of Commerce Dinner on Aug. 10. He discusses his life, education, interests, and beliefs.

10:26     AUGUST FIRST FRIDAY
Highlights of Main Street’s First Friday August 5, 2016 program includes 25 songs by 24 performers by the Fairmont State Academy for Music led by Leigh Anne Bolyard, director for the Fairmont State University Academy for the Arts. Interviews were held with Wayne Worth, First Friday co-creator, Emily Swain, interim executive director of Main Street, and Bolyard. 4 awards were given out by Main Street for volunteer efforts: Deputy Police Chief for Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College Matt Swain, Fairmont City Councilwoman Marianne Moran, Main Street Fairmont board member Amy Baker and co-owner of Arts & Antiques Marketplace Deloris Spatafore. Recognized at the end of the program was Brenna Craig, the AmeriCorps Vista volunteer for Main Street Fairmont. Highlights include comments from Fire Chief Ed Simmons on adopting fire standards; Police Chief Steve Shines on a grant to have City Policemen Jeff Merrifield placed at East Middle School and Donnie Neal placed at West Fairmont; Beverly Keener sharing thank you notes for City Council that she and Trish Julian collected at City Parks regarding the no smoking resolution; and Emily Swain introducing herself as interim executive director of Main Street Fairmont. Council matters included software agreement for parking meters, rescheduling council meeting from Nov. 8 to Nov. 9, and City Manager Robin Gomez discussing the seven items inherent in the water bill and reacting to thrown newspapers throughout Fairmont from the initial free Marion Times weekly.

Highlights of citizen’s petitions from Twyla Marra, Sharon Iquanita, Susan Schrader, Diamond Brown, Steve Atkinson, Debbie Seifrit, Debbie Harvey & Linda Antonk. Recipients from 101 Class were awarded certificates by Mayor Ron Straight and Hanna Weaver spoke on the program. Discussions focused on Time Warner Cable, Waste Management and as well as concerns on Bell Run Road Housing Construction

Highlights of the County Commission meeting includes comments from John Provins on Palatine Park; Kip Price on Sabro Latina and Calypso Event on August 20; Chris McIntire on updating and upgrading Emergency Response software; Charlie Reese on Riverfront Progress, and Walter Cooley on excessive amount of trash through the county. Meeting included to relocate Precincts 112 and 113 for voting, a lease agreements between the Marion County Commission and MCPARC and a revision resolution of the Coal Severance Levy Estimate (Budget) of Marion County.

02:45     STUDENTS STORYTELLING
3 students share their stories: Jared Moats of Philippi tells when a complaint about bad food at the school cafeteria becomes a presumed security; Anita Mosser shares the events of when her husband is shot and killed by a Marion County Deputy and the act of forgiveness that ultimately occurred later at the funeral home; and Leah Yoho relates the tale of when, desiring to get her little brother is further trouble with their parents, instead rescues him at the cemetery from being thrown into an open grave.

04:00     SHAKESPEARE FSU PLAY
The play, “Midsummer’s Night Dream,” was performed in April at Wallman Hall Theatre. It was directed by Dr. Francene Kirk, Abelina Suarez Professor of Communication and Fine Arts. Several students worked on the production as part of their capstone projects for graduation. Kurtis Dennison designed the costumes; Lillian Gaylord the dramaturg, and Lakyn Arrick as the education outreach coordinator. Taylor Riffle, a Theatre Education major, served as the assistant to the set designer. Faculty designer Troy Snyder designed the set. Actors performing were Hermia (played by Madison Whiting); Lysander (played by Craig Birkmeyer); Hermia’s father Egeus (Troy Snyder); Theseus (Jerico Offutt), Demetrius (Justin Wilkins), Helena (Bailey Kershner); Oberon (Brandon Lee); Titania (Lakyn Arrick); Puck (Tyler Kovar); Hippolyta (Cherie Helsley); Bottom (Gary Hayes) and Rebekah Ginsberg, Brandon Rose, Lilli Kail, Isaac Covey, Kelsey Ash, Pamela Chatman, Kelly Blake, Michael Byrd, Ingrid L. Poole and Anthony Edmond. The stage manager was Kaici Lore; lights were designed by Dan Fynaardt; Tyler Kovar did the sound.
