forum was held March 19, 2014 at Westchester. Dick Bowyer served as emcee. The panel
consisted of Dora Grubb, Marion Co. Historical Society; Wade Linger, Chamber of
Commerce; & Rev. Larry Collins, NAACP; Candidates appearing were Rev. James
Saunders, Mary Jo Thomas, Tom Dragich, Frank Moore, and Sam Brunett for the
Board of Education; Butch Tennant, Rick Garcia and Dan Weber for County
Commission; Belinda Biafore announced Democrats running unopposed in the Primary;
and Bobbie D. Triplett II announced Republicans running
unopposed in the Primary; Bill Burdick read letter from Shelly Capito; and
those appearing at the event were Kris Warner and Senator Bob Beach; Phil

drive that netted over $14,000 to benefit 12 food pantries in Marion County is
presented. Pantries benefitting are: Fairview & Mannington Food Pantry,

Pantry, Our Father’s Breadbasket, Salvation Army, Fairmont-Marion County Food

interviewed at the Firehouse Café on Feb. 22, 2014. Some pictures of their work
are given as well as statistics: 125 calls, 12 applications for work to be
performed; 7 jobs in progress; 79 driveways and ramps cleared; 16 home gutters
deiced and re-anchored; 1 full home clean out; 2 dry wall replacements, small
area from busted water pipe; 1 light fixture installed; and 2 rubber rip
handrails for shower installed; 9 busted pipes resolved and 1 stray dogs

COMMISSION: March 5, 2014: Commissioners made a motion
to sponsor the Colfax Public Service District as it applies for a Small Cities
Block Grant. Lee Wolfe, with the Region VI Planning and Development Council,
discussed this issue along with Kylea DeMarco, project engineer with
Thrasher Engineering.

COMMISSION: March 27, 2014: Five
Marion County high school wrestlers are recognized for participating at the
West Virginia high school championships: North Marion’s Ryan Elliott, East
Fairmont’s Dalton Michael, and Fairmont Senior’s Brent Barber, Anthony Alvaro
and Vincent Delligatti. Commission also dealt with a resolution requesting U.S.
Congress to enact and fund navigation needs on the nation’s rivers, approved
the hiring of courtroom clerk Camia Roberson for the Division II Court under
the Judge David R. Janes; and approved $500 for CASA Superhero 5K fundraiser
and $1,500 for Class of 2014 Projection Graduation. Marion County Solid Waste
Authority executive director Bobbi Benson requested a meeting to gather
information about a litter-control officer and shared the work of the MCSWA.

include Chris McIntire, director of Marion
County Homeland Security and Emergency Management, discussing posting of signs
along the trail to identify different landmarks with the Marion
County Parks and Recreation Commission (MCPARC); A public hearing for a
Worthington annexation was postponed until April 23 because there of an issue
with posting, and Commissioners approved individuals who will be working at the
early voting polls for the primary election. They signed two proclamations, one
for Wednesday, April 10, as Child Abuse Prevention Day.
2:13 COUNTY COMMISSION: April 9, 2014: Highlights
include resolution to develop West Fort River Trail System, three budget
resolution, Brent Skidmore and Donna Costello were elected to the Marion County
Development Authority for a three year term; Ted Offutt Director of the Day
Report Program shared a report; Kathy Mazzei, Fairmont Brine Processing Company
assistant, spoke, and Thrasher Engineering was approved as the project design
of the park of the docks and boat ramp.
2:39 COUNTY COMMISSION: April 16, 2014: Highlights
include Commissioners proclaiming the week of April 13-19 as National Public
Safety Tele-Communicatorʼs Week and Chris McIntire introducing all the
dispatchers and staff members of the Marion County 911 Center; Don Harris and Dr. Craig White of The Program
Advancing Community Employment (PACE) Project in Monongah requested a donation
from the commission of $2,000; D.D. Meighen told commissioners a Fairmont
General Hospital appreciation day will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Saturday, April 26, at the Knights of Columbus in Fairmont.
3:00 CITY COUNCIL: Feb.
25, 2014: Highlights
include an ordinance
passing to allow indecency and obscenity charges for harassment by telephone,
computer and electronic communication devices to be tried in municipal court;
Luke Elser, project manager with the Northern WV Brownfields Assistance Center,
spoke on the Brownfields, Abandoned and Dilapidated Buildings (BAD) Buildings
Technical Assistance Grant for $10,000 to the city; The City Council passed two resolutions to
enter into an agreement with local shelters HOPE Inc. and Scott Place Shelter;
and Jay Rogers said that they are currently in the planning stages for the
second year of Fairmont 101 classes.
3:49 CITY COUNCIL: March 11, 2014: Fairmont
City Council discussed the problems connected with the winter storms and the
good job of the city in relation o keeping street cleared and cleaned. Linda
Campbell, 416 Barnes Street, addressed Council regarding various issues. She
mentioned the following items: lights
are not working on the Gateway Connector and concerns on Barnes St., including ground
hogs and possums living on the lot. City Manager Jay Rogers addressed this
issue, the 10 inch water leak under Watson Bridge, and an update on the 2014
Legislative Session.
4:45 CITY COUNCIL: March 25, 2014: Fairmont
City Council approved the 2nd reading of the city’s Home Rule Plan for the next
city council meeting April 8 at 7 p.m. They discussed the city’s proposed home
rule plan and application which had been discussed in depth at the 5:30 p.m.
work session as it related to the four overall objectives: Business and
occupancy (B&O) tax credit for reoccupying a vacant or dilapidated
structure, rewarding businesses already in the area, rehabilitation or
preservation of a contributing building in the downtown historic district,
creation of a local sales tax only to items subject to
state sales taxes, and zoning code issues. The city unanimously adopted a
resolution proclaiming April 2014 “Fair Housing Month.”

COUNCIL: April 8, 2014: Highlights
include resignation of Travis Blosser, councilman for Fairmont District 2,
effective April 21; the balance for the street maintenance fee is $1,028,060.58;
a public hearings to be held April 22 at 7 p.m. for the renewal of a letter of
credit issued to the city of Fairmont, for an ordinance to purchase 211 Guffey
St., and for Fairmont’s proposed municipal home rule application.
