Neisha Bridges and her mother host the Professional Women Expo at Fairmont State. 33 vendors share their services and a fashion show highlights this program.
7:40 am - WVU United Way Basketball Clinic
Interviews are conducted with basketball players KJ Jones, “Truck” Bryant, Kevin Jones, Kevin Noreen, Keaton Miles, Aric Dickerson, Jabarie Hines and Assistant Coach Erik Martin. The players led drills for over 200 young people. Tiffany Samuels, executive director of the United Way, discussed the reasons the United Way sponsors this event and why the Mountaineers attend. Several kids are interviewed following the camp for their reactions.
8:10 am - 6th Historical Marker Dedication
Program done at the Disability Action Center features the history of the Fairmont-Beverly Turnpike and the Jones-Imboden Raids on Fairmont as displayed on the marker opposite the DAC, at the start of “Coal Run Hollow.” Dora Grubb tells an interesting story of 2 Presidents that came to Fairmont, JoAnn Lough leads the program and is interviewed, along with Art and Pam Dodds who represent Governor and Mrs. Julia Pierpont; Phyllis Baxter, Beverly Historical Landmarks Committee President and Terry Hackney, Manager of the Heritage Center. Fairmont mayor Bill Burdick exchanges gifts with Beverly. Richard Wolfe, Chair of the WV Sesquicentennial Civil War Commission, speaks on the history of these events.
9:16 am - On the River with Kim and Bob Rogers
Interesting sights are seen along the lower Tygart River and Monongahela River from the Benton’s Ferry Bridge to Prickett’s Fort. Along the way we viewed the union of the Tygart and West Fork River, the 12th St. Trestle where Confederate troops destroyed in 1863, David Morgan and Mollohan Bridge, Palatine Park, piers of the Nickel Bridge, and the forming of the Buffalo Creek into the Monongahela. We also tape and interview a young middle school jumping off the pier at an abandoned railroad bridge. Also viewed is Rt. 19 at Rivesville, the Power Plant, Hoult Bridge, and the bridges surrounding Prickett’s Fort.

Lengthy program features a weekend of activities for the 50th reunion of the 1961 EFHS Class. Highlights from the Shaw House, the Old High School, and the ISR Building are shown. Interviews are shown with Tom Smell, Chuck McClain, Annabelle Ross Zeck, Lynette Stanley Mason, Burley "Butch" Tennant, Bill Williams, Delbert "Butch" Phillips, Barbara Kasa, Carolyn Miller Fox, Mary Lou Scully King, and Carolyn Tokarz Huffman. Additional interviews come from Ken Miller, a brief video of John Veasey, Former Teacher Mike Oliverio, and all class participants. Butch Phillips shares the progress of the East Fairmont Foundation as well as reading the deceased names. The closing slide show by Chuck McClain is highlighted by spoken reflections and royalty free music.
12:00 pm - Council of Churches Service of Remembrance, Healing, and Hope
The commemoration service at East Fairmont High School revolves around Joshua, chapters 3 and 4 . A combined church community choir sang 3 songs: Grace, In Memoriam, and One Song. Choral Director was Greg Lauer and Pianist was John Morrison. Participants were Tim and Dorcas Conrad, Bill Sadler, Michael Richards, and D.D. Meighen. Joey Madina of the New Mystics read a piece called, “Today, a New Dawn Calls.” Sadler spoke on Hope, and Meighen did a Power Point on phone conversations he has had with Jill Miller, co-author of “Let There Be Peace on Earth” and with Jacob DeShazer who bombed Tokyo but was converted to the faith, and helped convert the lead bomber commander on the raid at Pearl Harbor, Mitsuo Fushcida. Their story of reconciliation and love reflects much on 9-11-01.
1:13 pm - India's Persecuted Christian Dahlias
Jo, spokesperson of the All India Christian Federation (AICF) speaks through slides and personal stories of the persecution of Christians (called Dahlias) in India. He relates how the caste system is both unconstitutional and unethical, discriminating not only against Christians but Muslims as well. He reflects the efforts that the AICF is attempting through the Supreme Court to overturned this law. Dr. Craig White also discusses the impact of this effort and his observances after returning from India

Highlights include honoring emergency responders, video highlights from the offices of Senator Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin, a sermon by Rev. Holley Faulkner, Jr., songs by the Baptist Temple Choir a solo by Ken Grace , and remembrances from County Commissioners Randy Elliott and Butch Tennant.

Highlights included a vote on an ordinance to abandon a right-of-way on Chicago Street from Howard Street to Anderson Street to demolish 3 houses for new housing. City manager Jay Rogers said the official opening ceremony for the Gateway Connector is scheduled to be held Oct. 15. Some events happening that day will be tours, a race with “glow,” speakers, and fireworks. Fairmont’s Little League 11-12 All-Stars were introduced and given a certificate.

Concern was raised over paving of Holbert, Lyman, and Garrett Streets in Jackson Addition. Marlene Mitchell and Anthony Horton spoke. City Manager Jay Rogers said that Holbert, Layman and Garrett streets were to be paved first until the state Department of Environmental Protection told them of doing mine subsi¬dence testing and work in this area. County Commission approved three 2 year no interest loans: first, $23,000 for an emergency sewage leak in Fairview; second, $20,000 loan to Farmington for Thrasher Engineering to conduct services necessary for acquiring Little Laurel Run and Lincoln Heights Water Associations; and third, $20,000 to Grant Town for the county’s part of the contract on the completed water line on Pantherlick Road. Also, Farmington is to provide the commission with mapping for the project.
In other news, Day Report Center director Ted Offutt showed a new ankle bracelet to deter people from alcohol abuse, which con¬ducts tests every 30 minutes and transmits findings to the monitoring entity. Offutt said the county now owns 10 of these ankle bracelets that cost about $1,500 a piece.
Commissioners postponed donation Request from Regis Salon for its “Clip for the Cure” until more information could be gathered. A dispositional Order in the Estate of Virginia M. Helms, deceased, was approved as well as an Order Establishing and Authorizing Payment of Fees to the Fiduciary Commissioner in the Matter of her Estate.

Terri Dalton, executive director for Habitat for Humanity, will discuss a special program on Sept. 11th commemoriating the beginning of International Week of Prayer and Building on Faith; Dr. Craig White discusses a special program on India to be held at Central United Methodist Church on Sept. 9th to learn about the effort to make all “untouchables,” including those of the Christian Faith, full citizens in a ten year legal battle. One of the leaders from India will be coming and sharing the testimony. Rev. Matt Holbert of Grace Lutheran discusses the exciting new Wednesday Program at the church called “WOW.” Information is shared about two Sept. 11th Memorial Service: One at the Baptist Temple at 6:30 p.m. and the other at East Fairmont High School at 7:00 p.m. Finally, comments are given about the October 22nd Breakfast that will be held at Westchester Village with U.S. Senator Joe Manchin speaking on “Personal faith and Public Responsibility.”
