U.S. Senator Joe Manchin III brings the message for the evening. Awards are given out to students, the business of the year, as well as the public servant, the Jack Squires Lifetime Achievement, the Community Impact Award, the President’s Award, and the Chairman’s Visionary Award.

8:21 am - United Way Kickoff Breakfast
Interviews are conducted with co-chair Alan B. Mollohan, Executive Director Tiffany Samuels, and Board Chairperson Mary Jo Thomas. A few clips of the opening breakfast are shown with words from Dr. Maria Rose, interim President of Fairmont State University and Dr. Doreen Larson, President of Pierpont Community and Technical College.

8:39 am - Valley Dance Reunion at Knights of Columbus
Highlights include interviews with Jim Moody, a band member; Ben Polis, organizer; and Joe Cerisano on getting started into music and the inspiration of the song, “Carbon Copy.” Scenes of those who gathered along with some music from Subway will be presented. Joe Cerisano will sing the songs “Carbon Copy, For Nothing At All,” and a closing portion live of “Country, It ain’t something you decide to be.” His songs, “Off the Interstate” and “American Gold” will be presented via video.

Michael John Aloi is sworn in as Judge of the 16th Judicial Circuit of Marion County by former Judge Fred L. Fox II. Assisting is cousin and law partner of 28 years, Delegate Tim Manchin. The highly emotional affair featured brief messages by “Butch” Tennant, President of the Marion Co. Commission; Ron Tucker, President of the Marion County Bar Association; Earl Ray Tomblin, acting Governor of WV; Joe Manchin III, U.S. Senator; Fred L. Fox II, the retiring judge, and the presenter, Tim Manchin. Judge Aloi then gave remarks and closed with a South African Prayer. James Sago gave the closing.

Highlights include the City approving a monthly amount of $2,887.50 of $8,750.00 to Marion County Animal Control after lengthy debate on a 6-3 vote. The city and county also provide liability insurance for the service and gaso¬line for the vehicles. Council approved an ordinance transferring a property at 950 Field Street to the city’s building com¬mission. User Fees was hotly discussed.

Highlights include the city voting to approve a matching grant to receive $35,000 from the WV State Historic Preservation Office to repair the roof on the Masonic Temple building on Jefferson Street. City manager Jay Rogers said the city had a $700,000 carry¬over from last fiscal year which will be used to cover overtime for the fire department, insurance costs and the city’s other post-employment benefits liability. Also, $35,000 carryover in coal severance will be used exclusively for winter road maintenance like salt, cinders and plowing. Council members expressed their prayers for Patrolman Ryan Powley.

Toni is honored at the Women’s Club for her 10 years with United Way. Mary Jo Thomas moderates, Dixie Yann reads a letter from Dave Elkinton, Tiffany Samuels gives a heartwarming summary of her life, and individuals share brief comments from the floor. Toni then comments.

Highlights from the 2010 Breast Cancer and Health Awareness Day at Fairmont General Hospital include comments by Betty Markovich and Judy McVicker.

2:30 pm - Backpacks
5 Programs are shown of collecting or distributing backpacks to Fairmont and Marion County students at Central Church of the Nazarene, Valley Chapel, Faith, and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, and Windmill Park. Comments are given by Jeff Haught and Cindy Ewing from Central Church of the Nazarene; Casey Garcia of Faith; Marcia Kisner of St. Paul’s and Sue Littleton from 612 MAC.

2:47 pm - 104th Morgan Morgan Reunion
A Major highlight is the singing of “My Monongahela” by Jonathan Turner, written by William Prunty and rearranged by Robert Ellis. Other highlights include “We Remember” by JoAnn Lough and the 201st Field Artillery history given by retired Major Jimmy Thornton. Raymond Morgan sings National Anthem, Rev William Wilson prays, Jacob Miller plays drum, and Mountaineer shots gun. Comments and presentations by President Gary Sweeney are offered. Treasurer Steve Martin offers the Morgan History from the standpoint of the Civil War. Rita Lashley discusses the Morgan home now being restored by Jim Rote in Greentown. Christina Mae Cook from Hopkins, Michigan is interviewed. Music is by the Faith United Methodist Praise Band. Other music includes Appalachia (Southern Traveler) for the beginning; On Memory’s Highway (Thinking Back) during a portion of JoAnn Lough’s comments; On Memory’s Highway (Movin On) during the discussion of the Morgan children. 65 video clips and pictures are used to underscore “God Bless the USA” and “My Monongahela” at the conclusion of the program.

Highlights include WV State Senator Roman Prezioso sharing the needs of West Virginia seniors and the important work of the AARP on behalf of its citizens. Representatives speak on various topics of Senior Programs: Gayleen White, State Director; Susan Lefew, AARP Foundation; Liz Bradford, Driver Safety; Linda Bunn, Volunteer Opportunity; and Ruth Wagner, AARP State President.

Highlights include approval of poll workers and ballot organizers, support of Humane Society at $2,000 a month, hiring of Sharon Sims as Administrative Assistant to WVU Extension Service, and listened to a heartwarming story by Joe Staud.

Roger Wilson, Fire Chief, introduces program. Detective Dustin Hotsinpiller of the Bridgeport Police Department is the MC. Joe Torrillo, a New York firefighter of 9-11 who was buried alive twice during rescue operations is the special speaker. The Fairmont State Marching Band performs two selections, Amy Stuart sings the National Anthem, and bagpipes conclude the show with Amazing Grace.

5:52 pm - St. Pauls’ Backpacks
Highlights include discussion with Rev. Larry Buckland on the Backpack Giveaway at the Back to School Bash held on Friday Night, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday morning, Aug 18-20 at St. Paul’s. Recipient Anna Davis is shown receiving assistance in getting backpacks. 31 pictures are presented by Gina Cole.

Highlights include Ministers Rev. Larry Buckland and Aslam Barkat discussing the vote for union to be held Sept. 25th between Faith and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Terri Dalton, executive director for Habitat for Humanity, will discuss a special program on Sept. 11th commemoriating the beginning of International Week of Prayer and Building on Faith; Dr. Craig White discusses a special program on India to be held at Central United Methodist Church on Sept. 9th to learn about the effort to make all “untouchables,” including those of the Christian Faith, full citizens in a ten year legal battle. One of the leaders from India will be coming and sharing the testimony. Rev. Matt Holbert of Grace Lutheran discusses the exciting new Wednesday Program at the church called “WOW.” Information is shared about two Sept. 11th Memorial Service: One at the Baptist Temple at 6:30 p.m. and the other at East Fairmont High School at 7:00 p.m. Finally, comments are given about the October 22nd Breakfast that will be held at Westchester Village with U.S. Senator Joe Manchin speaking on “Personal faith and Public Responsibility.”
