Program Hightlights

7:00 am - Smithsonian Museum of American History
Hundreds of Images, Videos, and Narration accompany the viewer through this American History Gallery. We began with transportation through the years, move through the Wars through the centuries, view scenes from a home over 300 years, view the diary of a Civil War Nurse, observe African American images and history, and tributes to American Culture. Special West Virginia features include a vintage 1950 Buick, students at Rowlesburg leaving a school, and a cast iron 113 Mile Marker from Wheeling to Petersburg along the National Highway.

Numerous highlights of the visit include segments on the Moon Landing, the Wright Brothers Shop in Dayton and the flight from Kitty Hawk, history of African-American Pilots, famous airplanes and people that includes Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, and Chuck Yeager. Famous West Virginians on display at the Air and Space Museum includes Charles “Spanky” Roberts of the Tuskegee Air Men, Chuck Yeager and his X-15 “Glorious Glenna” Airplane that broke the sound barrier for the first time, and. We hear airplane music through the years as well as films that showed air travel.

8:00 am - Aubrey Stewart Program - Fairmont
This 4th of July Program centers on Patriotism. It’s the true story of West Virginian Aubrey Stewart, one of 11 African American soldiers who was tortured and killed by German troops in a snowy field in Wereth, Belgium at the "Battle of the Bulge.” The American Government hid this information for over 50 years. Piedmont residents T.J. Coleman and Kip Price narrate the story between slides, a movie trailer, and a Washington D.C. TV station report. At Veterans Square in Fairmont, John White sings the National anthem, and interviews are conducted with students Frankie Greeley and Jamere Harston and sculptor Don King, creator of the Aubrey Stewart fold up Statue. T.J. Coleman proposes "National Unity Day"& Petition while proposing a vision for the future.

8:58 am - Civil War Marker/Garden Club
We’ll hear some of the history of Marion County’s Civil War from Dr. Richard A. Wolfe, Chair of the State Sesquicentennial Coalition. Dr. Jim and Elizabeth Coleman-Swiger recall tracing the journey of 107 cemeteries in Marion County in search of Civil War soldiers. Dr. Coleman will discuss the placing of shrubbery and decorative work surrounding the marker at the bottom of Madison St. In addition, Dr. JoAnn Lough will discuss the importance of Skinner’s Tavern that used to sit across from the depot at the corner of Kirk Way and Madison St. Rebecca Davis, District Director of the Cheat-Monongahela Garden Clubs will share a few thoughts. And, WV Senator Robert Beech will share his role in securing help for the placing of markers. Wha-ke-we-nn plays music of the period

Request for funds for Little League All-Star teams from Donnie Neal; 4- the opening of sealed bids for MC Trail Paving; and 5 – a Check for $16,000 to each presentation for Marion County Volunteer Fire Departments.

The new minister at the Barrackville/Monumental United Methodist Church, Rev. Janice V. Smith, is interviewed at the parsonage. Rev. Smith brings a rich heritage as she describes her life in western Pennsylvania She talks of her family, her work, her calling, and her foster work with 26 children through the years.

11:24 am - Mission Team Work in Southern WV
The Ecumenical Work Team of the Greater Fairmont Council of Churches worked in Oceana and Kopperston in southern West Virginia of Wyoming County the week of July 4-8. Led by Deacon David Lester, the group of 12 represented various faith groups, age, and skills. The group worked on 3 dwellings: one home and two trailers. The program visits the 3 work sites as well as the Kopperston Presbyterian Church where the group headquartered. Interviews were conducted with Gene McVicker, Ralph Evans, and Mason Evans.

Highlights include discussion by members of the Police Department on need to increase salary to retain and recruit policemen to Fairmont. 2 members spoke on that need. Kip Price, Vice President of the Aubrey Stewart Project spoke about the project and the forthcoming event to be held at the Veterans Square on July 4th. Bob Sapp sought clarification on the minutes of June 14th on the procedures of City Council to deny appointment recommendations from various agencies within the city, such as the Park and Recreation Commission, of which he is a member.

This program was recorded on July 22, 2008 throughout Fairmont. Frank Perry conducted many of the interviews and filmed the event. Those interviewed were David Hamilton, coordinator of the work experiences; Rev. Kenny Robinson (founder of the church), recipient Mrs. Fayette Evans, and volunteers Ed Lukewiller of St. Louis, Ken Hinsley of Lawrenville, Georgia; Christian Graham of Steversville, Maryland; James and Cadle McKie from Scotland; Cameron Taylor from Scotland; Mike Robinson and Ben Hamrick. Views of the Dayspring Camp where the work teams stayed are shown. Program concludes with testimonies and worship.

This July 16th Unity Day of Aubrey Stewart in Piedmont brings the vision of founders T.J. Coleman and Kip Price to remember Aubrey Stewart and the 11 African American soldiers who were tortured and killed by German troops in a snowy field in Wereth, Belgium at the "Battle of the Bulge.” The American Government hid this information for over 50 years. Piedmont residents T.J. Coleman and Kip Price narrate the story between Power Point Presentations, a movie trailer, and a Washington D.C. TV station report. T.J. Coleman proposes "National Unity Day"& Petition. Executive Producer of the film, Wereth 11, Joe Small speaks to the gathered and shares comments following the showing of the film. An interview is shown with him.

Saturday afternoon at Windmill features a day that African-Americans celebrate as their 4th of July- June 18th. Under the leadership of John Kenet Shabazzm, chair of the WV Black Unity Coalition and Lajuana Logan, chief of staff for the WV Black Unity Coalition, the program featured the showing of the internet film, “War on Your Soul.” Evan Williams is interviewed on her understanding of the day and the life of Abraham Lincoln. In addition, Marc Tennant, “WARDOG” President of the WV Ruff Ryders is interviewed about the motorcycle group’s involvement with family values and assisting the Black Unity Project, as well as a fund raiser for 612 MAC.

City Council approved rezoning from business to residential on Ullom St. It also approved payment on eight installments of water treatment plant and upgrades. David Sago, Utility Manager, spoke and answered questions on the progress. In addition, Steve spoke on police recruitment and retention and need to have a work session with council. Field St. resident Bagwell shared her concern over garbage pick up and Waste Management’s policies. Council member Bob Sapp echoed the same.

The second program is Mission to the World 2011 where leaders and students from Manchester, Connecticut are interviewed, repair of a home is shown and the final outcome is shown, and scenes from Vacation Bible School are presented. The third program is “Marriage on a Hill,” overlooking Marion County pass the Barrackville community.
