The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is observed during a week day at Fairmont General Hospital through the efforts of Rev. James Riggs, chaplain. He is assisted by Rev. Dr. Bill Sadler of First Presbyterian. The Hospital Chapel is utilized as the site and much reading material is offered to those who participate. A history of the Chapel is offered, touching on the life of Rev. Eleanor McElroy in whose memory the chapel was constructed.

The day is observed at Morningstar with numerous singing, speaking, and youth participation. Umojah Voices of Joy sing numerous selections; the Spiritual Life Dancers from the Temple of Christ perform, and main speaker Warren Baker of Fairmont State brings the inspiring message. History of this day is traced by youth; Charlotte Meade observes the efforts to build a monument, and members of the local and state NAACP speak.

US Senator Joe Manchin stops in Fairmont on his “Common Sense” Tour to visit the Marion County Senior Citizens Center. He discusses issues with both selected persons from the community and the community at large issues of concern to Seniors. He answers questions and offers insight on his new position and responsibilities.

In other actions, agreement between The Fairmont Sanitary Board And The Town Of Monongah for collection of fees is supported as well as Certain Wage And Benefit Agreement By And Between The City And Lodge 69 Of The Fraternal Order Of Police Dated December 16, 2010; A Resolution Of Council Establishing An Ad Hoc Sesquicentennial Celebration Advisory Committee to plan Local Events Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War is enacted. Following Executive Session, City Council appoints various people to different chartered commissions and positions.

1:30 pm - County Commission: Jan. 5, 2011
“Butch” Tennant is elected President of the Marion County Commission. Business items include Proclamation honoring Boaz Fleming, founder of Fairmont, WV.; Resolution designating Marion Regional Development Corporation as the lead economic development organization for the County; the Opening of Sealed bids for Marion County Jail Electrical Project with no official action being taken; Revised Application for Funding for the Transportation Enhancement Program for CXS Acquisition from Barrackville to Mannington, for Federal fiscal Year 2011; and Recommendation from the City for the reappointment of Jeff Carpenter to the board on the Fairmont-Marion Transit Authority. There was discussion on City recommendation to the County for appointments.

Al Babcock is recalled in this interview from Feb. 2007. He shares his philosophy of life, his association with WVU football and basketball, his joys of family life and service to the community. Many excellent stories are recalled as a man of great honor is remembered. He once served on 14 boards and commissions as either President or Secretary.

10. UNIQUE MINISTRIES of Individual Churches. Highlighted were the Shoe Give Away of First Presbyterian, “It’s All Free Seriously” Give Away at the Baptist Temple, the Food Pantry at Central United Methodist Church, and Music Ministry of Central Christian (Disciples of Christ). 9. 2 WORK TEAMS. Led by Deacon David Lester, two teams are led yearly by Lester. The first team goes to a Hurricane Katrina site from the day after Christmas to the day following New Year’s. The second event goes to a site in West Virginia, devastated by a flood or natural disaster. This ecumenical venture has been an inspiration to both the suppliers and the recipients. 8. CROP WALK. Changed this year to the first week in May, the CROP Walk raises funds for Church World Service, especially world hunger. 25% of the funds stay in the county for assistance with local hunger projects. The walk began at East West Stadium and involved a route around Fairmont on both the East and West Side. Rev. Scott Ingleton and Holley Faulkner, Jr. spearheaded the effort. 7. SPECIAL WORSHIP SERVICES. In 2010 special services were held in January for the Haitian earthquake victims. A few months later a special service was held for the miners and their families of the Upper Big Creek Mine Disaster on April 8th 6. CHURCH LEAGUE BASKETBALL. Completing its 64th year, the Junior and Senior League had a very successful season. Interviews were conducted with the directors Sharon Buonaiuto and Don Downs 5. SPIRITUAL INVOLVEMENT. The Council offers intense religious involvement to the town and county. Weekly and Bi-weekly Prayers are offered at both the City Council Meetings and weekly County Commissions through June. Teaming with the Church at Fairmont, they provide County prayers from July-December. Through the efforts of Rev. Chris Duckworth, weekly services are offered at the John Manchin Health Care Clinic on Guffy St. 4. MEDIA PROGRAMS. A 24 hour 7 days service is provided to 26,000 Time Warner Subscribers with a TV station supported by the Council. Also available on the web at http://gfcc.peg.tv the Council of Churches broadcasts programs of local and global significance. A web site is maintained as well as a Facebook site. A few grants have been secured for programming and production. 3. UNITED WAY “99 and 1” CAMPAIGN. For the first time ever, the Churches endorsed the 2010 United Way Campaign and raised nearly $3,500 in a record setting goal of over $400,000 to provide services to the citizens of Marion County. 2. CHRISTMAS TOY SHOP. For the second year the Council of Churches teamed with the Times West Virginian, the church at Fairmont, the County Commission, the FRN, and the Marion County Board of Education to provide over 10,000 free toys and items to the children of families in Marion County. An inspirational message is given by Mary Ellen Finegan, minister at Central Untied Methodist Church. 1. DEALING WITH RACISM. The Greater Fairmont Council of Churches worked with numerous groups to provide a historical program that combatted racism in 1954. This almost forgotten experience was the first Black-White Football game in West Virginia held the same year of the Supreme Court’s Decision to desegregate. Amidst threats and demonstrations in Marion County, the game was played without incident. A halftime ceremony, an assembly, and breakfast surrounding these events and those who participated were held and commemorated.

A few grants have been secured for programming and production. 3. UNITED WAY “99 and 1” CAMPAIGN. For the first time ever, the Churches endorsed the 2010 United Way Campaign and raised nearly $3,500 in a record setting goal of over $400,000 to provide services to the citizens of Marion County. 2. CHRISTMAS TOY SHOP. For the second year the Council of Churches teamed with the Times West Virginian, the church at Fairmont, the County Commission, the FRN, and the Marion County Board of Education to provide over 10,000 free toys and items to the children of families in Marion County. An inspirational message is given by Mary Ellen Finegan, minister at Central Untied Methodist Church. 1. DEALING WITH RACISM. The Greater Fairmont Council of Churches worked with numerous groups to provide a historical program that combatted racism in 1954. This almost forgotten experience was the first Black-White Football game in West Virginia held the same year of the Supreme Court’s Decision to desegregate. Amidst threats and demonstrations in Marion County, the game was played without incident. A halftime ceremony, an assembly, and breakfast surrounding these events and those who participated were held and commemorated.
