Highlights included discussion of home rule, approved ordinance to
purchase three lots that adjacent to the city’s sanitary sewer facility, and
notice that
the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals will hear the oral arguments in the
case of the City of Fairmont vs. Fairmont General Hospital on May 14. Council
recognized the struggles of retired coal miners and supported the preservation
of health care and pension benefits. Rogers said that Fairmont’s city-wide
clean-up is scheduled to take place from April 8 to April 12.

Fairmont City Council members voted to adopt a resolution approving the
fiscal year 2013-2014 city budgets, Council showed support of the new Fairmont
101 program to start April 18 to educate residents on how the city operates.
Four Marion County wrestlers were recognized for their recent victories at that
state championship. Jesse Roman and Garrett Onderko of East Fairmont High
School, Ryan Elliott of North Marion High School and Anthony Alvaro of Fairmont
Senior High School earned state championships in their respective weight
classes. Mayor Ron Straight proclaimed today, March 13, 2013, as Earl N.
Straight Sr. Day, in honor of his father, who turned 102 years old on Saturday,
March 9. Earl Straight was Fairmont’s first mayor under the current form of
government. Rogers announced that the city now has an active Twitter account,
@FairmontWVgov, that will provide updates to the community
